The NHL Suffers from a Lack of Color
The NHL is known for a lot of things, diversity is not one.
The league’s most popular players consist of such names as Sydney Crosby, but there are no big name black players in the league.
Many consider the MLB to be the sport that is least appealing to black people, but most of the all-time MLB leaders are black. In the NHL, there are only 10 active black players.
Ever since the Civil Rights Movement, black people have been making moves in sports. The NBA, initially did not usually give black players the treatment of whites, but the ABA did, welcoming such names as Julius Erving and Connie Hawkins. Ever since the 1976 merger, the NBA has been dominates by black athletes.
Black people slowly, but surely, invaded the NFL the same way. Many consider the late Steve McNair as the best player in the league’s history.
Maybe, one day, the NHL may feature more black athletes as the sport becomes more popular amongst blacks.
