With recent Democratic losses, Can Artur Davis win Alabama?

Artur DavisPeople have been trying to compare Artur Davis to Barack Obama ever since the congressman announced his intent to run for governor in 2010. It seems more and more like all that Davis and Obama have alike is college affiliation and skin color.

Ever since early this year, many political publications have become obsessed with this black man who feels that he can become the Governor of Alabama. A few months ago, many were saying that he had a chance. After all, this was only months after Barack Obama became president and there was a major Democratic wave taking place.

However, those months have added up to become one year since the election of Barack Obama as president. It has also been three years since the Democratic wave took place that saw such people as Deval Patrick take office. Such Democratic strongholds as Virginia and New Jersey held gubernatorial elections yesterday.

In both elections, the Democratic candidate was in trouble and it took campaigning from Barack Obama to keep them a float. Despite campaigning from the president and the states’ high approval of him, still, they decided to elect Republicans. It is safe to say that Virginia and New Jersey are Democratic states.

Alabama, on the other hand is a Republican state. There is no getting around that. If the Democrats had trouble maintaining their party’s role as governor in Democratic states, how can a Democrat become governor of a Republican state? Especially in a state like Alabama, looking at what happened in Virginia and New Jersey, how can one expect them to elect a Democrat, black at that, as their governor?

It is possible, but looking at what has happened, the comments made by Charles Barkley seem a bit more in-line.
